Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte Airport - All Information on Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte Airport (AJA)

Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte Airport is a public airport and it is the main airport serving Ajaccio, the capital of the French island of Corsica that sits in the Mediterranean Sea. The airport is located 5 km/3.1 mi east of the city’s center and 14.5 km/9 mi north of the town of Porticcio.

The airport was formerly known as Campo dell-Oro Airport and the first regular flights were to Marseille on the French mainland in 1935. A Vichy Air Corps unit was kept inactive at Campo Dell’Oro in 1940 and 1944 the United States Army Air Forces took over the airport. As heavy aircrafts were unable to land on the still soft grass field they put down a hard surface of perforated metallic mats and towards the end of the war the runways were paved, which was the beginning of forming the foundation of a more modern airport.

Today the airport is named after Napoleon Bonaparte who was born in Ajaccio. The airport’s IATA code is AJA and the ICAO code is LFKJ and it serves the area of Ajaccio. It is operated by CCI d’Ajaccio/Corse du Sud.

There is one single runway with a bituminous concrete surface. The airport saw 1,673,308 passengers move through it in 2018, which decreased to just over 1,600,600 the following year and it dropped down to below 1,000,000 during 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Air Corsica has their head office located on the airport property.
